Club Kids and Drag

The Club Kids were a group of young New York City dance club personalities led by Michael Alig and James St. James in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The group was notable for its members' flamboyant behavior and outrageous costumes. Club Kids still exist today and constantly question the idea of identity and gender through the power of makeup and fashion. They wear eccentric clothing, costumes and makeup and take upon unusual personas/character.

Drag is also within the category of Club Kids as it questions sexuality. Drag is when men dress like women and become a female impersonator, often performing on stage doing lip syncs, singing, dance, comedy etc. To do drag you must be skilled in makeup, design, fashion and performance. Most drag artists are homosexual therefore it is especially loved within the gay community. Drag allows men to express their feminine side and become a completely different person to who they really are. For example Sasha Velour is a drag artist who challenge identity and often looks gender fluid as she looks feminine but keeps her bald head (does not wear wigs).

Rupaul is a famous drag queen who revolutionised drag into the modern world with the help of her show called 'RuPauls Drag Race' (In which Sasha Velour won season 9). RuPaul achieved international fame as a drag queen with the release of his debut single, "Supermodel (You Better Work)", which was included on his debut studio album Supermodel of the World (1993). In 1996, he became a spokesperson for MAC Cosmetics, raising money for the Mac AIDS Fund and becoming the first drag queen to land a major cosmetics campaign. That year, he received his own talk show on VH1The RuPaul Show, which ran for two seasons before he began co-hosting the morning radio show on WKTU with Michelle Visage. He has had continued success as a recording artist, releasing eleven studio albums to date, including Foxy Lady (1996), Champion (2009), Glamazon (2011), Born Naked (2014) and American(2017). Her show has made drag a lot more mainstream and popular within this generation, allowing gender fluidity and gay people to be celebrated and understood better, as well as cross dressing to be more accepted.
