A genealogical method
Lecture/seminar - A genealogical method
In today's lecture James asked, what is a method? It is the pursuit or quest/journey.
For our projects we must creatively trace history and fabricating the past, it is not about digging up facts, it’s creating and synthesising.
How’s it different to history? History is mapped on a linear axis. Genealogy is more chaos, difference and unexpected experiences like multi directional non linear history. It allows for complexity and difference. We must try to encounter unexpected stuff and explore.
We constantly create narratives of reason that dismiss the complexity of things. Narratives make reality understandable and we have been asked to make new narratives like new abstractions, this can be thought of as a critical narrative. Not a passive observation, it’s an active participation. We must interpret things differently and give things more meaning. James gave an example of this which is Giuseppa Archimboldo's paintings for example this one called Spring. This is a good example because he has taken the object of fruit and flowers and changed their narrative by using them to create a human face.
