Friday 14th October 2016:
Today was my first meeting in my group B with Steve. We were in small groups so that we were able to share our ideas and plans for our sketchbooks which was helpful. I had started some mind maps in my sketchbook for each topic we have to cover and ideas of what I can put into my book. I showed these plans to the group and was given advice on what I could add to my book. Stephen told us about visual artists like UVA which helped kick off my secondary research as I decided to put it in my book. The session helped me figure out what to put in my book and how to start it. It also cleared up questions I had such as when the sketchbooks are due for formative assessment. From this I decided that by the next session I wanted to start work on my secondary research, researching some of the artists Steve recommended. I also wanted to have a lot of primary done that week, focusing on sketching from photographs I had taken
Friday 21st October 2016:
Today was the second studio session meeting. Everyone showed their sketchbook progress and I was surprised at how little everyone had done which is annoying because I was looking forward to seeing other peoples work and how they had laid it out and what they had researched so that I could gain inspiration and compare it to my own. I then showed my work to the group and Stephen said what I had done so far was good and suggested what I could add to it for example I had drawn some buildings from Paris so he said to do a micro view of the building details such as iron bars so I did. From this session I gained confidence on my current progress since some people had not even started yet. I was also given advice on more things to research. I plan to do all this in time for my formative assessment.
Friday 16th December 2016:
Today was the last day of term in 2016 which meant we had to present our sense of place part two work. I got into a group of three with Amy and Nathan and we took it in turns to show each other our work and I went second. I was pleased with the response I got from them as it seemed to be mostly positive. They liked my idea of re-branding the event and also how I had presented my work for example Amy said the black background and white text matched the theme. I think they liked my poster designs and Nathan even asked if I had made them! They also liked that I had used mock ups well. Nathan said it was good that I considered making things other than just a poster and logo as I had also designed bags and t shirts.
Amy and Nathan used the sheet we were given to rank my work as four sections were given ranked A, B, C and D. They ranked B first which was aesthetic and language because my posters and mock ups had really good aesthetic. A was second which was concept development because I had re-branded an existing event so I solved a problem and showed my work developments along the way. C which was technical response was fourth and D which was integration and synthesis was fith because I had re-branded.
Aiden also came over and looked at my final work and gave good feedback. He said he liked my work but pointed out some spelling and grammar errors that I plan to fix but he said he did this because the layout is very good so small errors can stand out more easily. He also suggested making poster designs with different coloured backgrounds instead of just black just to experiment, but he liked the blending vector background I made.
Overall I am happy with my work and the response and feedback I was given. I will now concentrate on taking in the feedback and applying it to my work.
Friday 3rd March 2017:
Today I showed Aiden my work progress so far on the book cover brief. I showed him my sketches and he liked them a lot and really liked an idea I had for the book 'In Cold Blood'. I also showed him my research document so far and he gave some good criticism. He said that the layout was too much and I needed to simplify it, for example remove the large title on each page to make more space. This week I plan to do more sketches and designs as well as adding work to my research document and editing it so it looks better.
Friday 10th March 2017:
In this open studio Stephen came over and we talked about ideas for the back of my book cover after I had shown him the front I had designed so far. I was having a problem with editing my typography that I had scanned in so Stephen suggested downloading the app adobe draw. Once downloaded he showed me how to use it and I plan to use it in the future because it looks so much easier than scanning! Aiden also came over and instructed me to change the layout of my research document because the type was too close to the images I had scanned in. He also took a look at my book design and said to re try some things. I am going to re draw the socks and feet with longer legs so I have more freedom of where to position them on the page. I am also going to re do my type but not all together in one block but separately, so I do not have the current issue of not being able to edit the text because the anchor points are all connected. I need to try out some other font styles too, but I am keeping some as Aiden said he liked them.
Friday 24th March 2017:
Today I attended a mini seminar hosted by Rob and Aidan all about typography. There are four categories of typography; serif, sans serif, script and decorative. When designing, a font category should be chosen that fits with the tine of the design and then stick with it. Choosing five fonts to always use is good as it saves time.
I learnt that kerning is the space between letterforms and tracking is the equal spaces in the whole word. Leading is the distance between the baseline of successive lines in type and rag is the irregular or uneven vertical margin of a block type. Usually it is the right thats ragged but either or both could. Line length should be considered. Hierarchy must be considered as in what is the most important information and use size and placement to emphasis this. Lastly they said study it and show interest.
