Theory as Practice
One of my first lectures on the Graphic Design course was about theory as practice. We were taught that praxis means theory to practice and was shown a diagram of a triangle where each point meant either practice, theory or history and this combined equaled praxis. A theory provides framework which can be used to explore and support ideas, develop hypotheses or as a basis for critique (which means asking questions about work). I also learnt the meaning of certain words that all had something to with theory of practice, for example:
- Theoretical framework is the certain angle of looking at something
- Analysis is the practice of breaking things down to aid understanding
- Synthesis is bringing things together
- Meta means referring to itself or the conventions of its genre
I also learnt that design authorship is to command your own creativity, be your own client and film theory auteur. This inspired me and is what I intend to achieve.
