Space and places

To help us with our sketchbooks we underwent a task about space and place. In a lecture we watched a video called the powers of 10 which helped us with our work today. In the video it zooms out of the image starting at 1 meter and it zooms out to 10 meters then 100 meters and so on, until its light years away and then zooms back in further.

This video was relevant because our task was to make sketchbooks to record a personal memory as text and maps of different scales and we had to draw the maps from a birds eye view. I completed four sketchbooks. The first sketchbook was about when me and my boyfriend went to Paris and drank wine by the Eiffel Tower. I started with a zoomed in image of the wine and gradually zoomed out.

Sketchbook two was about when I ate Ben and Jerry's chocolate fudge brownie ice cream for the first time whilst sat by the Sydney opera house in Australia.

The third sketchbook was when I stood on a poisonous fish (called a weaver fish) in the sea whilst holidaying in Tunisia with my family.

The last one was the time when on a college trip to Berlin we were walking back to the train station from visiting designer Patrick Stewart's studio when we entered a rough part of town and a man tried to grab my bag and steal it, however I managed to get away.

Once we had completed these we got into a group of five and shared our memories with each other. We then categorised the memories as we had to creatively put them onto a long roll of paper in a map form. Our categories were in landscape zones, for example sea and beach were a group and city etc. This was to help us with our mapping and knowing which memory could go where.

We decided to have the end starting as the sea and a beach because of my fish memory and Amy had a memory on the beach. The map then progressed into a park because there were memories that happened in a park. It then lead onto a street with houses as their were a couple of memories that took place in the home such as making a snowman in the garden and Christmas morning. Then there was a school as there was a memory that took place at school. It then transitioned into the city were my mugging memory fit and so did the drinking wine one because we began to draw the Eiffel tower in our made up world. The map was from birds eye view. We all took roles at drawing different sections of the map. My job was to make the sea. I decided to use dark and light blue paper for the sea and shredded them into waves that overlapped one another. I also added scraps of white paper to make the foam of the sea where it crashed onto the beach. This looked nice and effective and showed a range of different medias used on our work. We planned to re draw our memories onto paper and stick them onto the map to show a zoomed in image of our memories, unfortunately we ran out of time to do this and to complete the work however in presentation we just laid our memories out next to the map where they would take place.

This was our final piece, granted it is unfinished, however I think it looks good and that as a group we worked hard and together really well. We then got a chance to look at everyone else's work to see all the other ways others tackled the task.
