Telling Tales
Today's lecture was called telling tales, part one was about iconography and part two was about authenticity. In Greek, iconography means 'image' and 'to write'. It is the identification and description of the content images. Authenticity is the quality of being authentic, so in the art industry the original painting is the authentic one.
I learnt that images speak and designed to communicate a message or tell a story. I also learnt about iconology which is the study of meaning contained within iconographic symbols for example interpretation of the content within images. Anna also spoke about metaphor, which is analogy derived through association and resemblance.
An example of authenticity shown were two images of two different paintings, however both the famous painting 'The Girl With The Pearl Earring'. It is hard to decipher which is the real one (authentic) and which is the fake. Questions raised upon the subject were that does it matter which is the real and fake, because both paintings required the same amount of painting skill. However I think that it does matter which is the real one, because of authenticity. The original was a painters idea and to see the painting that the famous painter Johannes Vermeer painted in a gallery would feel more exciting and satisfying than seeing a replica because the replicas painter did not think of the idea, they simply copied the image and repainted it themselves, therefore I don't think its the same.
