Kinetic typography animation
In this process and production lesson with Sara, we were creating a kinetic type animation. She instructed us to bring in some drawings and type so I began brain storming of what my animation could be. She said the type could be quotes or song lyrics, so I looked through music and lyrics that I liked to choose from. In the end I chose the song 'The less I know the better' by the band Tame Impala. I took inspiration from the songs music video, as it is probably my favorite music video of all time and I love the aesthetic and animations in the video, as well as the lyrics.
I brought into the lesson some drawings and digital type. I planned for the back ground to be white with multicolored spots. I made this using coloured pro markers and scanned it in. I also wanted bananas to be spinning and floating around in the animation so I drew one with pro marker and fine liner. I took inspiration for the banana design from Andy Warhol's Velvet Underground album cover that I have studied for my essay as I think the pop art style would go well with the planned animations aesthetic. For the text I wanted it to be similar to the text on the music video so I tried to find a font on my computer that looked similar and edited it, adding outlines and giving each letter a different colour. I firstly planned to hand draw the type however this would have taken too long regarding the length of the lyrics.
In the lesson I had to make some changes to the layers of my illustrator documents so that it would work with Indesign. I put my artwork into my Indesign document and firstly animated the bananas so that they span in different directions and speeds. To create the kinetic animation style we had to change the settings from one view to two. This allows you to make the video 3D and adds a camera. I also had to turn on each action to 3D so that it would work.
I began to try and make it look as if the camera was floating forward through space, with the dots, type and bananas passing by by changing the position of the objects on the newly added view two. Unfortunately half way through the document frozen stopped working and whenever I pressed play nothing happened. I lost some work and was unable to finish the animation because of this error, as well as the lesson ending.
However I have tried to finish the animation off the best I could at home. I rearranged the type and figured out where to place them in regards to the camera so that it flowed in an order. I was only able to use 'oh my love' out of the lyrics I wrote as the rest was too long and did not fit. I chose some music from free music archive to put with the animation. Preferably I would have paired the tame impala song with the animation but we are not allowed for copyright reasons so I chose a funky indie song, one that I think matches the video and is a similar to the song the lyrics are from. When changing the camera I accidentally made the camera zoom in and out t the very end of the animation. This was an accident but I think it is kind of cool and different to a normal ending for this
type of animation.
What I do not like about the video is that the type is extremely blurry. The video is rendered in the highest quality so I do not know why it is so blurry and nor do I know how to fix it. Overall I think that I had a good concept for the video and the visuals I made were nice but due to the blurriness and less of the lyrics it is not as good as I had envisioned but is still a good attempt.
