Post Production part two

Today Anna presented part two of last weeks lecture. This one was about appropriation, pastiche, parody and satire. I learnt that appropriation is the intentional borrowing and copying of pre-existing work. This method has always been around in the design world, Salvador Dali even said 'those who do not want to imitate anything produce nothing'.

An example of appropriation within design is Banksys 'Mooner Lisa'. Here he has taken an existing piece and created a new comical piece of art with the help of play on words within her name.

Another example of an artist taking the Mona Lisa and using it to create a new piece of art work would be Marcel Duchamps 1919 work called LHOOQ. Here the artist has simply taken the original painting and added a mustache and goatee beard to her face. It is a subtle chnage to the painting yet stil effective due to its comical element. It is named LHOOQ becasue it is a pun becasue when these letters are pronounced in french it sounds like "Elle a chud au cul" which in english means "She is hot in the arse"! Both Banksy and Marcel have used the name of the work for comedic effect therefore it becomes an import part of the artwork.

I also liked an example given that was by Sherrie Levine called 'Fountain'. This art work is appropriation of Marcel Duchamps 'Fountain'. The fountain is instead covered in bronze metal. It is given the same name which shows an obvious appropriation of Marcels work but she has changed it to make it her own.

Pastiche, parody and satire is a critique driven by a desire to make a social commentary to challenge the status quo. John Holcroft is a satirical artist that I like a lot. I like the style of his art as well as the clever way he conveys a message through imagery.
