Branding Lecture
Singular idea/concept by the consumer = branding
Today was our first day back after Christmas break and our first lecture was all about branding. We were shown various branding artists such as Barbra Kruger who doesn't use computers for her work as she instead opted for a traditional method of creating her posters and billboards (for example the 'I shop therefore I am') by using silkscreen and cut out which I found interesting and unique. Another artist that was shown was Chris Jordan who focused on using art to express how we as consumers create so much waste and that the things that we use everyday is so mass produced its harming the environment. He does this by creating art that looks exactly like famous art work/paintings but when you zoom in it reveals that the image is actually made up of things such as cans, plastic bags or plastic spoons which I thought was really amazing and smart because you only realise what its made of only when zooming in really close.
We also learnt that design cannot be understood in isolation, but within a communication system and that when designing, the emphasis should always be on the consumer. A brand is a visual, emotional and rational image that you associate with an extremely powerful image.
