Book thumb-nailing
Today with Rob we were given A3 paper to thumbnail on to help us design the penguin book cover of our choice, which for me is 'The Diary of Adrain Mole aged 13 3/4'. I have looked at a summary of the book since I have not read it, to help me grasp the idea of the book and find important plots in the story that I can translate into the cover design. I found out that the girl Adrian fancies ends up liking him because he wears red socks to school instead of black, so I thought it would be a good idea to design some covers with the red socks as a focus. After researching old book covers for the book I noticed that there was no sign of socks in the designs which would make my design more unique. I brainstormed some other ideas as well such as glasses and newspapers.
Rob instructed us to try and explore the unexpected, invert one element and explore outcomes and then retry to make more outcomes. I thought that to step out of the norm that my design could include no sign of diary like many of the others signs do. This would make the book cover different from the rest which is what the brief is looking for.
