Collage research

For my new brief I think that collage could be a fun route to go down. I have always loved making collages and would love to do more. I have thought about how you perceive yourself and have imagined maybe making collages that are a self portrait but with layers of other images that represent the person. Any way, here are some collage artists I have researched for inspiration.

Rosanna Webster

Rosanna Webster is a designer, who sometimes uses collage to work with fashion magazines like Vogue. Her pieces are slick and pattern-focused, and demonstrate a highly creative and unusual approach to fashion editorials. I love these mixtures of people, texture and nature abd the bright colours used.

Shay Colley

Shay is a collage artist and her latest collage work is based around an unusual approach to portraiture, taking what look to be old school photographers, framing them, and photocopying them until the facial features are barely recognizable. These look quite dark especially the way facial features are unrecognizable and blurred

Adam Hale / Mr Splice

London-based artist Adam Hale makes incredible collages using pictures from free magazines. I have been following his work on Instagram for some time now and love everything he does. He has worked with big brands like Adidas, YouTube, Mulberry, Christian Louboutin, and ELLE magazine. Plain paper is his signature background to keep his 'splices' simple. Some collages are made using digital tools too which is also quite interesting. It would be fun to have a go at that myself.

Dr Me

Dr Me is two people, Ryan Doyle (DR) and Mark Edwards (ME). They are artists specialising in art direction, collage, image making, video and graphic design. The duo is based in Manchester and the French Riviera. I have picked out a few of their work that really interests me. The first design has the image distorted by cutting it into strips and and moving them so the image is staggered at different heights. I like this way of distorting an image. It is simple but effective. The second piece is similar as the image is cut into circular sections and moved to distort the face. I like the thought of distorting the face and making it unrecognisable for my project and this could be a fun way of doing so. I like the use of paint in image three. The background is replaced b coloured paint. It is interesting to wonder what was really the background, why was it covered and who is the person, as you cannot see their  face.
