Cinema 4D with Jay Payne 2

Today we had the second process and production (cinema 4D) lesson with Jay Payne and created three animations that showed us some interesting techniques and methods to create some really cool unique content on Cinema 4D. The session introduced me to dynamics & particle systems purposed for randomised design. The outcome from these workshops will be a series of design experiments using Cinema 4d. I had seen the work that previous students who had had this lesson had made and was excited because I really liked the look of what we were to create!

The first animation we made was of a tunnel with 3D balls falling down the tunnel and was called twisted geometry.  Firstly I created a square line object which then was extruded and made hollow so that it was a tube. I then added a Twist Modifier which made the tube twist and this was able to be modified of how extreme the twist was desired to be. A star effect was later added to make the tube look like it does in the final outcome. Then a material on the tube was added with these steps: luminance only / Texture / Surface / Checkerboard. The checkerboard design was to be edited so that the tube was covered in black and white stripes. Then a sphere was added. I made this sphere black and purple striped, and gave it a reflective fresnel effect which made the sphere really shiny and reflective.

Next I added a camera that pointed down the tube. A particle emitter was next, this made lots of the spheres I made fall down the tube. Dynamics then needed to be added because the balls would collide into each other and go through the tube so adjustments had to be made to make sure the balls bounced off each other and the walls, and fell straight down the tube.
This is the final piece! I think that it looks really cool and I like how 3D it looks. The black, white and purple look good together and it looks quite hypnotizing.

The second animation we made was called generative textures. This started with a plane object, with a displacer added to make the plane ripple like waves, with a black and white striped pattern. Here is a still of what this first looked like.

Material mapping was then adjusted so the waves looked good and the material was edited to the style and colours we wanted. The colours I chose were light and dark purple, red and yellow. For these colours I was loosely inspire by the album art for 'The Currents' by the band Tame Impala as this waving effect reminded me a lot of the cover art as it is a similar style. Below are some stills of my work followed by the video.

As you can see on this technique the colorful patterned 'floor' moves and ripples, like waves. I like the outcome of this because it is quite cool and 'trippy'. It was also fun adjusting the pattern and the intensity of the ripple to how I desired and being able to play with the different effects.

Part 3 was called Particle Post Modernism. This one started with following jays instructions of particular shape layers we had to put down on a new document. These were three polygons (of different sizes). Then coloured materials were added (Grey / Dark Grey / Yellow / Orange / Light Blue /  Dark Blue / White / Black) which were then added to the polygons that were copied about seven times. Then I dragged all poly's into emitter with a  particle birth of 20x20 4.Variation to Speed & Scale was added we could also adjust Particle Seed for variance. Then a title, background and camera was added.

This not my favourite animation of the three because of the style and colours. Jay chose the colours and shapes and said they were taken from a Bauhaus design which is okay but not particularly my style. That is also why we had to add the word post modernism onto the design. However overall I enjoyed the lesson. I found it quite challenging at times and hard to keep up with the steps because most of the time missing one step would mess up the work and leave you lost. Luckily Jay helped whenever I missed anything or anything went wrong. Cinema 4D is not one of my prime interests but I do enjoy playing around with the software and learning new things because I am slowly getting more comfortable with the software.
