Library visit
Instead of our usual Thursday morning lecture, Rob instructed us to go to the library and hunt for some books that could interest or help us with our book brief. The book that I found was called 'Illustration, Meeting The Brief' written by Alan Male. I chose this book because I wanted to know more about illustration as I think that my book designs will be heavily illustrated. The book also talks about briefs, which I thought might help me tackle my book brief better.
Illustration is visual communication and a visual art practice. This includes painting, sculpture, drawing and even installation art. I learnt that the purpose of illustration is to serve society and convey a message. Because of the internet an illustrator must utilize practical and technical expertise with a skill set that draws upon intellect, innovation and creativity to be successful. An illustration brief can be presented in an infinite number of ways because the parameters of illustration practice are so broad, however in the end the main part of the brief is to solve a problem. Effective analysis and research will help with this. The key is to identify the imagery and think about where and how it will be seen and by who. These will be determined by the message and nature of the audience. When designing for my brief I must think like this by analyzing the information given and then thinking of creative and unique ways to tackle them.
The book also showcased illustration work. I liked the image above which is an illustration of a house that appears to be sinking. I love the way the water is drawn and textured as well as the way the house looks, as if it is being engulfed by the swirling waves.
