Order and Chaos

Today's lecture was called order and chaos: introducing postmodernism and exploring deconstruction. I did not know what the difference between modernism and postmodernism but Anna explained it.

  • Modernism is western arts from 1850 and the rejection of styles of the past and reflects modern society. Modernists wanted to forget history such as the war and to design a better world. Impressionism and surrealism is under this category.
  • Postmodernists were opposite to modernists because they wanted to recycle the past and create new things from it. They believed modernism had failed.  This style sometimes feels erratic and confrontational.
Some examples of impressionism is uncanny valley, a topic I have previously covered. Kitsch is also postmodern. An example of this would be Michael Jackson and Bubbles (1988) by artist Jeff Koons. Fantasia and hyper-reality are also examples of impressionism in which I am interested in. Disney land is these things because it is a realistic place you can interact with but its a false illusion which attracts visitors. It's a place where imagination and creativity is made real, a childlike world in the real world that allows adults to act childish. Computer games are also similar as they feel real but they are actually an illusion. Both of these things connect with uncanny valley as both things look and feel real, however I would not put them in the category where it feels uncomfortably creepy and real because in this situation you are fully aware it is not real despite it feeling so.

To help us understand postmodernism better we watched a Pink Panther animation called 'The hand is pinker than the eye'. The story is that the Panther breaks into a magicians house and strange things happen. This video explored postmodern ideas, showcasing illusion and reality including the flattening of surfaces and the panther being in both the real and illusion world. It breaks down the screen eye relationship and questions whats real. We also learnt that deconstruction is a method of reading and reveals a text contradiction.
