Narratives Seminar
In our essay seminar today we focused on narratives. When writing our essay the introduction must be straight to the point (no rambling!) and set the theme of the essay. To help us understand this we were shown the beginning of films/the opening sequence because these all set the scene for the films/programmes.
Firstly we watched the opening sequence of The Simpsons and also Muppet Christmas Carol. From these I noticed that they set the scene and give you a sense of the tone and what to expect. We then watched the Texas Chainsaw Massacre opening and I wrote the following notes: the threatening music, darkness and way the clips are choppy/flashing cause unease and set an instantly eerie and scary tone, setting the expectation of the film.
Even though a film is not the same as an essay and I cannot set the scene with the help of visuals and muisc, the theme of narratives still applies because I will need to show tone and expectation in my essay so the reader understands and can flow along with the text without too much confusion.
