Cinema 4D (as a design tool) with Jay Payne 3

Today I had another cinema 4D lesson with Jay Payne. In this lesson Jay showed us how to create our own 3D and realistic looking can, beer bottle and carton that we will be able to use in the future to put our own artwork on to present it as a realistic looking prototype before printing. This excited me because I will be able to use it in the future, and it will look better than Photoshop templates from websites like Graphic Burger that I usually have to use.

Can

The first object we were shown how to make was a can. Jay had prepared an illustrator file with the template for the shape of the can. I put this into Cinema 4D and as soon as a lathe was added, it formed the 3D shape of a can. I then smoothed the edges of this and changed some settings. A background, floor and lights are added to create the environment the can is in. Then a can material was added where we were able to add the artwork Jay had provided us. All the artwork he provided was purposely bad so that we will be encouraged to design our own after the session.

I also added the top of the can and edited this making it look like it is made out of metal. Once the can was complete I cloned it to make two more and used random effector / Parameter / rotation only to make them sit next to each other and for all three to show each area of the can so you can see how the design works on all areas of the can. As you can see from the final product the cans look 3D, show the design and have a shadow.

Beer bottle

The next step was to make a beer bottle prototype! Again an illustrator file of the bottle was provided and I did the same step to make it 3D (lathe). I added a green glass texture to this bottle to make it look like a beer bottle and also added the beer inside the glass.

Then a label was added which was provided as a template, a circular one for the front a rectangle on the back. I added the artwork provided to this. Again I added a floor, walls and lights.

The bottle needed a bottle top, so Jay showed us how to make our own. To do this I set up a new document and created several shapes at different sizes, these were the guidelines of the bottle top shape. Adding a 'loft' to these made it 3D, with a bit of editing.

So I ended up with a 3D bottle top cap that I then placed into the bottle document and placed the lid on top of the bottle. I also added artwork to the bottle top.

Carton

For the carton we did not need an illustrator template, Jay just instructed us to make a polygon shape and use the dimensions he gave to create the cartons shape.

The template for the carton had different sides with different designs so Jay showed us how to be able to add a design onto each face of the carton and how to position it correctly. Once the carton was complete, I added the environment once again and positioned my own lights.

I enjoyed this process and production, and look forward to creating my own designs to add to the prototypes I have created.
